Water Bug or Roach? You Become the Expert!
It can often be quite difficult to identify and separate different types of insects, especially when they share similar traits. For example, the water bug and cockroach share similar characteristics. This can lead to confusion of which you are dealing with if you’re not an expert. However, after learning just a few key differences, you can be identifying these 2 species in record time!
The first thing to easily identify are physical characteristics. For example, water bugs are often brown or gray in color, and about 2 inches in length. On the other hand, cockroaches are usually redder in color. Furthermore, water bugs don’t have antennae, while cockroaches do. This is the easiest and most foolproof way to identify either a cockroach or water bug. The most common species of cockroach that is confused with the water bug is the oriental cockroach. This is because they are darker in color, making them more similar to the water bug. However, oriental cockroaches cannot fly, while water bugs can. In addition, although not typical unless provoked, water bugs bite, unlike their cockroach lookalikes.
