Box Elder Beetles In Your Home? Here’s What To Do

Box elder beetles are very common insects that are found throughout North America, and they are often found by homeowners in the spring and fall. This is when they emerge in large numbers. Unlike termites and carpenter ants, they are neither harmful or destructive. However, they can be quite the nuisance due to their invading of homes in search of warmth or shelter.
They are easy to identify at about 1/2 inch long, black bodies and distinctive red or orange markings along their thorax and wings. Their wings lay flat over their bodies, forming an ‘x’ shape. Young, immature beetles are much smaller and bright red, eventually developing black wings.
Box elder beetles get their name after the box elder tree. This is a type of maple tree that acts as a primary host. These beetles also feed on ash trees as well. In the spring and summer, box elder beetles live and breed indoors. They lay their eggs on the leaves and bark on the trees they choose. Nymphs then hatch and feed on the leaves and seeds until they complete their development. This cycle takes a few weeks. Box elder beetles usually produce one or two generations per year, which depends on the climate. When temperatures begin to drop, they will seek out warm shelters during the winter. This could be cracks, crevices, siding, and the attics of buildings. This is when they can become quite the nuisance!
They can become a problem when they appear in large numbers and invade your home. Also, when crushed, they can release a foul odor and leave behind reddish/orange stains. Some people may also develop some mild skin irritation from contact with the beetles.
There are many ways to prevent box elder beetles from invading your personal home and space. This may include:
- Sealing entry points: repair screens, seal gaps around doors, windows and cracks.
- Remove female box elder trees near your home if possible, since the beetles are drawn to these.
- Limit outdoor lighting since they can attract insects. If outdoor lights are used, use yellow ‘bug’ lights that are less attractive to insects.
If you find that these insects have invaded your home, avoid squishing these beetles, since they can lead to staining and a lingering odor.
