United States Environmental Protection Agency’s bed bug tip of the month is identifying the pest. As bed bugs are becoming more common in households in Columbus Ohio, people seem to forgot about ticks, fleas and lice. Although bed bug is biting insect like ticks, fleas and lice, it is a lot harder to get led of. The appearance of bed bug is very different as well.

According to EPA, they are collaborating with our federal partners like CDC, HUD, DOD, USDA.
They are also working with state and local agencies to better understand the issues and find solutions.
However, public is asking for intervention from EPA due to high cost of bed bug treatment.
The EPA’s role in bed bugs is limited to regulating pesticides that are used not the cost.

Years ago, ticks were relatively unknown in Columbus Ohio. A new study shows 26 counties have reported tick issues, including Franklin and Delaware counties.

Tick can be harmful because it can carry Lyme disease. The illness can be easily treated with antibiotics if diagnosed early. If missed, it can mean misery for years.

Those infection could have a few days of flu-like symptoms, then feel better. But the disease does not go away. It could spread into the heart, the joints, and the nervous system.

Lyme disease may be difficult to diagnose, because symptoms can vary. To cut the risk of getting sick, everyone should spray skin and clothes with an insecticide containing DEET when entering areas where ticks are known to live, like wooded areas.

With such early warm weather, Columbus, Ohio Residents need to prepare for an abundant population of ticks. Here are a few tips to keep you and your family safe. This advice is from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

Use a repellent with DEET (on skin or clothing) If you’ll be in a woods or grassy area, use repellents containing atleast 20 percent or more DEET. Don’t forget to spray your shoes and socks. Ticks are on the forest floor and are likely to climb aboard from the ground.

Avoid tick-infested areas. Ticks like wet environments, near woods or grassy areas. It is common to come into contact with ticks while walking through vegetation such shrubs or tall grass. Best to hike in the center of trails.

Toss clothing in the dryer: Ticks can be carried into the house on clothing, but placing them in the dryer on high heat will kill them.

Perform daily tick checks. Check your body for ticks after being outdoors, even in your own yard. If you were in a tick-infested area, use a hand-held or full-length mirror to view all parts of your body. Be sure to check under the arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, back of the knees, around all head and body hair, between the legs and around the waist. If you find a tick, remove it carefully with a tweezer.
